EIGHT

I managed to snag a parking right in front of the town hall. Before we climbed out, I texted Grey to check if he was in his office. He wasn’t. He was in the assembly room on the ground floor, where the task force was gathering for their first meeting.

The timing was excellent.

For all her faults, Pandora was a trusting soul. She blindly allowed me to lead her through the passageways of the town hall to the assembly room.

Grey wasn’t messing around with his task force. The attendees ranged from the most influential to the most powerful. Kain Arnauld was amongst them, the head of the Shadow Vale vampire nest and my date this evening…I’d briefly forgotten about that, what with everything going on.

The head of our coven, Azure Dovetail, stood to one side with Alejandor Loom. Thank the stars! Both were uniquely qualified to deal with our Greek tragedy in progress.

As I moved deeper into the room with Pandora in tow, heads turned and conversations dwindled into silence.

Kain wasn’t immune. He came forward to intersect and greet me with his usual charm, but his gaze kept straying to the beauty at my side. I didn’t hold it against him.

I introduced her. “This is Pandora.”

Amusement twinkled in his silver-dusted eyes. “Pandora?”

“It’s exactly what you’re thinking,” I informed him.

Pandora wasn’t immune to his charms, either. She smiled coyly. “Are you Epimetheus?”

Kain arched a brow at me, like it was my fault he had the swarthy dark looks of a Titan.

“This is Kain,” I said to her. “He’s going to look after you for a minute,” I called to him as I made a beeline for Azure and Alejandor, glancing around for Grey. Where was he?

“Kristen,” Azure murmured, appraising Pandora with guarded interest. “Who is your friend? It would appear she’s cast a spell upon the entire room.”

“You have no idea,” I sighed, and launched into a hushed explanation of Brenda’s Greek myth theory and where Pandora fit it.

At some point in my story, Alejandor managed to shake himself out of Pandora’s thrall and give me half his attention. “That is interesting. Ms. Seele was just voicing her opinion, and she has a similar theory.”

“Not Greek myths specifically, but stories brought to life from a book,” Azure said. “There’s a precedent for it. The Grimm Witch.”

My stomach soured. Not that I minded being upstaged by Laura Seele…scrap that, I totally minded. I was that shallow.

“The Grimm Witch brought characters to life from the book of Grimm Fairy Tales.” Alejandor’s head bobbed as he spoke. “That was a nasty business by all accounts.”

“It was before our time, around the eighteen hundreds, if I recall correctly,” Azure said to me. She tapped a finger to her lips, her gaze narrowing across the room on Pandora. “Before Ms. Seele interrupted, we were discussing whether the lake creature could be an apparition. This is fortuitous, assuming your Pandora is cut from the same magic, since she’s far more accessible to us.”

“She’s all yours,” I said, glancing around again.
